Club President
Club President Charles H. Sjoberg died peacefully on the morning of 25 March 2002.
He was 92 and had been ill for some time. He is survived by his wife Katie.
Charles was instrumental in starting Epping Golf Club, having played most of his golf at West Essex Golf Club, where he was the longest serving member (67 years). He played many times in the Lesley Wood and Thornton Cup competitions, and at his best played off a 4 handicap.
His enthusiasm for golf inspired sons Neil and Peter to become avid golfers and eventually build this course, where he put in a huge amount of work right up to his 90th birthday. In his later years he sometimes helped behind the counter. When people tried to pay a green fee he waved them away (either not hearing or understanding) "You just go and enjoy yourself" he would say. Hence the inscription on the bench by the second tee to which many members contributed.
Until the building of the Epping Golf Course, the Sjoberg family were for many years active members of West Essex Golf Club, where Charles won many competitions and trophies. In particular, 1952/3 saw him walk away with so many wins that his handicap fell from 20 to 8, helped by Katie reading from Byron Nelson's famous book.
Charles' ashes were scattered on the 18th fairway. Thanks to all for your kind messages of support. Charles is still with us in spirit - nothing would please him more than seeing everyone enjoying themselves on the course.
The current President is Mr Arthur Tallon
